EXPOSURE
TO SUNLIGHT AND MOISTURE
ASTM B117
FOR PAINT
Our
client in this case is an ambulance manufacturer who had tried a number
of various paints on their ambulances. There had been some
failures, so they needed a controlled test to find out which
paint performed the best with road salts. This would enable them
to purchase wisely and avoid problems and warranty work.
Below are various test samples
from various manufacturers of paint that our client had been previously
using.
Quoted Report:
Results:
After 150 hours of
salt spray exposure, there was considerable difference in the
performance of the various products. Above are some of
the pictures of the samples after the initial 150 of 250 hours.
Already at this point of the testing there are clear patterns
emerging.
At the top of the list, there are the four products that are showing no
visible creep. In the worst performance group are the X1, X2, X3.
Both do not meet the spec. After only
150 hours they are over the 3 mm of allowed creep and are on their way
to mass paint failures.
ASTM B117
FOR DAMPERS
Here is another example of an ASTM B117 test done.
PROCEDURE #1
Torque Readings of Dampers
PROCEDURE #2
Observed Samples for the following changes:
Using ASTM D610 Evaluating the degree of rusting of painted steel
surfaces.
Evaluation of the Finish - Visual observation of the change of
appearance.

Sample tested with ASTM B117 Salt Spray

Sample progressively worsened from white residue covering 90% of sample
at 100 hours to rust covering 95% of sample at 600 hours.

Whether
you improve your product or need to reformulate your product
for any number of reasons, testing is vital for providing comparison
data of your new formulation to the original product. If you have
a number of new formulations to test and compare, you will quickly see
which product formulation gives you the best results.
Product
Failure Can Be Caused by a
Number of Variables
If you have a problem with a product, but can not decide what the
problem is, you can test different coatings in conjunction with various
fittings or materials, to pinpoint which material is giving you the
problem. Once the problem is identified, it can be fixed.
Finding
the Best Coating or
Materials Using Comparative Data
We can simulate weathering to predict how long and how well a coating
or material will perform. This comparative data can be used to
select the right materials.
